Did You Know? Indication for
Raloxifene
Raloxifene (Evista) 60 mg/day
is now indicated for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
The MORE (Multiple Outcomes of
Raloxifene Evaluation) trial, a multicenter study followed 7,705 women with osteoporosis
for 58 months. It was found that when administered once daily, raloxifene decreased the
incidence of first-time vertebral fractures by 55 percent.
It also reduced subsequent vertebral
fractures by 30 percent. Furthermore, raloxifene increased spine and hip bone mineral
density by 2-3 percent compared to placebo.
While preventing fractures and
increasing bone mineral density, raloxifene also reduces LDL and total cholesterol with no
effect on HDL.In that study, there was no increased risk of breast, or endometrial cancer.
