Mr. James Olmos and I

In October 1999 both Mr. James Olmos and I were among the many speakers and authors at the University of Southern California - USC in LA.

Edward James Olmos & Latino Literacy Now are proudly presenting the 2018 North San Diego County Latino Book & Family Festival on Saturday, September 15 a free event at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California.

My friend Georgette Baker who was born on the island of Aruba and raised in Venezuela is the producer and author of 32 bilingual books and CDs of children’s music. She will be a speaker as well and insisted that I participate.

I will be presenting two workshops, one in English at Noon: “Living Life in Balance, Mind, Body, and Spirit” and at 2 PM the Spanish version “Como Vivir en Equilibrio: Mente, Cuerpo y Alma.”

In October 1999 both Mr. James Olmos and I were among the many speakers and authors at the University of Southern California – USC in LA. Afterward, we were assigned the same booth to sign our respective books. His was “Americanos: Latino Life in the United States – La Vida Latina en los Estados Unidos” and mine, my best-selling and award-winning book “Menopause Made Easy” with a chapter on Healthy Aging by Louise Hay published by Hay House.

I had seen him in the movie “Stand and Deliver” an American drama film in 1988 where he played Jaime Escalante in based on the true story of an East LA high school math teacher who challenged the system and the stereotypes to raise the standard of life for his inner-city students. For his role, Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

It was one of the many precious moments I experienced in my life. The icing was that after the crowd was gone – of course, his was much bigger than mine, when he found out that I was fluent in Spanish we spent some precious time between signing books and eventually just the two of us learning about each other’s culture, dreams, and hopes for the future.

When our time was up, it was just like I was leaving an old friend, and my agent who had come with me took this beautiful picture of the two of us that I cherish and am sharing with you.
